While photographing Miss Mackenzie, I found out that Melissa and I shared a common bond! We both hired the same amazing south jersey doula for our births. Carly, with A Mothers Calling Doula Services and La Luna Counseling and Wellness, is simply the best. Her approach to support in labor is unparalleled, and she’s currently pursuing her studies to become a midwife. It was so comforting to realize that both Melissa and I had the privilege of having Carly, a south jersey doula, by our sides during such pivotal moments in our lives.
My first birthing experience, which was quite the marathon lasting 36 hours, was also Carly’s first time as a south jersey doula. We both learned so much from that experience, and I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive companion during such a long journey. In contrast, the second birth was an induction, and while it was much quicker, I followed Carly’s advice diligently. Every woman should ask her about laboring on the toilet—it’s definitely a game changer! Don’t knock it till you try it!
Mackenzie’s newborn session was a beautiful yet challenging experience, infused with a palette of pinks, browns, and neutrals that perfectly captured her sweetness. During family photos, we aimed to create lasting memories during this special time by making them unique. However, Mackenzie, like many little ones, struggled with reflux during the session. This made things a bit tricky, as she was quite fussy and needed frequent breaks to manage her discomfort. Additionally, she was cluster feeding, which meant I had to be patient and take my time between shots.
Melissa had a lovely vision for the session, one that included her husband’s cowboy boots and cowboy hat. This was such a fun and meaningful addition to the photos! Incorporating those elements allowed us to add a personal touch, creating images that reflected their family’s unique story. However, capturing that perfect shot with the cowboy hat proved to be quite a challenge! Mackenzie was just too big to fit comfortably into the hat, so I had to think outside the box to make it work. After some creative adjustments, I’m thrilled with how those images turned out—they quickly became my favorites! The combination of the cowboy hat and Mackenzie’s adorable expressions created a magical moment that I hoped to capture.
Reflecting on both of my births with Carly’s south jersey doula support, I realize that her empowerment was a crucial part of the experience. Without her advocacy, I’m not sure how I would have been able to make it through either labor. She respected and honored my wishes, never questioned what I wanted, and helped me gain the confidence I needed. As a first time mom when I hired her, I needed all the help I could get! I birthed during COVID so things were a bit wonky then. The presence of a south jersey doula like Carly is invaluable, as she truly empowers women to own their birthing experiences.
Throughout Mackenzie’s newborn session, that sense of empowerment was palpable talking about south jersey doula, Carly. It reminded both Melissa and me of the incredible journey we’ve embarked on into motherhood. Each moment captured during the session. From Mackenzie’s tiny features to the playful addition of her dad’s cowboy hat, serves as a treasured reminder. Not only her arrival but also the support that helped us navigate our incredible, albeit sometimes challenging, journeys into motherhood.
