After a failed maternity session swap with Jordyn Kasey Photography, I was determined to capture some beautiful studio maternity photos of my growing belly and my son. It was not that Jordyn was doing anything wrong, Maverick was just not having it. He was cranky and uncooperative because of an illness, making it nearly impossible for her to get a good shot.
I have had so many clients ask me about studio maternity photos and if I had any examples. Since the studio finished construction in early May of 2023, all my mama clients want to have their maternity photos taken outdoors. That makes total sense because that is when the weather is nicest here in South Jersey. So, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to create a portfolio of studio maternity photos. I had my camera on a tripod with a remote trigger to take the photos myself.
DIY Studio Maternity Photos
Each day, I would set up the studio, get myself dolled up, and try to coax Maverick into taking a few photos with me. It was exhausting and frustrating, but I was determined to get the perfect shots. One day, when he was in daycare, I focused on my solos. What would typically take only 30 minutes to capture the images for a studio maternity session took me over 90 minutes! Correcting my camera angle and pose and ensuring the images are in sharp focus takes incredible patience!
After a few failed days of trying to get images with Maverick, I lucked out! He was finally in a good mood, the stars aligned, and I was able to capture some truly magical photos. It was a combination of patience, perseverance, and a little luck. I couldn’t believe I had actually done it – I had captured my own studio maternity session.
Looking at the photos now, I am so grateful for the time and effort it took to get them. They are not just photos, they are memories of this particular time in my life that I can look back on for years. I am proud of myself for not giving up and pushing through the challenges. It was a reminder that sometimes the best things in life are worth the effort to achieve.
